Norfolk County man charged with arson after fire destroys home: police

A 39-year-old Norfolk County man is facing an arson charge after a fire destroyed a home in Norfolk County, Ontario Provincial Police say.

OPP and the Norfolk County Fire Department responded to reports of a house fire on Monday at 11 p.m. on Concession 6 of Townsend, Ont. between Highway 24 and Old Highway 24.

Const. Ed Sanchuk said when first responders arrived, flames scorched the shed and home.

They tried to get inside of the house, but the heavy smoke made it too dangerous.

Sanchuk said a man was seen on the property with a firearm and tried to leave the scene.

After using the K-9 unit, Sanchuk said police used a drone to spot the man and arrest him without incident.

Firefighters eventually extinguished the fire and stopped it from spreading to nearby homes.

There were no reported injuries and the fire marshal’s office is investigating.

“The house is a total loss, there’s absolutely nothing left,” Sanchuk said.
